Death

Pav palak ki khabar nahi, karein kaal ko saaj,
Kal achanak jahdpega, jyon teetar ko Baaz.

Meaning- The fallacy of humans, they are not even aware of what happens to them in next 100th of a second, but still they keep planning for tomorrow. Kabir says that they would not even know that tomorrow the Eagle, the metaphorical death, is going to grab the bird, the metaphorical human life. So Kabir makes a point that one should not waste too much of time and efforts on planning for tomorrow and ignoring present.

Chakki Firti Dekh ke, Diya kabira roye,
Do kunth ke beech aaye ke, sabut gaya na koye.

Meaning- When Kabir sees the traditional Indian flour mill which has two stones revolving over each other and crushing everything in between. Same is the fate of human life, irrespective of rich, poor, achievers, failures, weak strong eventually will get grounded by the grinding stones of death and would eventually meet the same fate.

जिस मरने से जग डरे, मेरे मन में आनंद | कब मरू कब पाऊ, पूरण परमानन्द || 
The whole world fears death, but death will be full of bliss for me I am waiting for death which will merge me, into absolute bliss

Gnanadev Namdev

Kabir had to serve Gnanadev and Namadev along with their disciples. By that time he had a son by name Kamaal. Kamaal was greater than Kabir in his bhakti. He was lured to God’s name even as a child Kamaal toured round many holy places to spread the name of God. Spiritually rich people do not aspire for material bliss. So Kabir was once again penniless. Kabir had no other go except to steal from somebody.

Kabir took his son to steal from a shop. Kamaal dug a hole to the wall and through that went in Father instructed the son to bring only as much as was required. The son was two steps ahead of his father. He was worried somebody else would rob the sethji of his money, after they left. So he woke up the owner and told him so. Why will an ordinary seth understand the generous heart of a small boy ? As the boy was leaving out of the hole, the owner caught hold of his feet.

Kamaal suggested a way out. ‘Father, there is no time to waste. If all the people rush here, our theft will become an open secret and our guests will take it as an insult. So you cut off my head and take it away along with the provisions. The father was touched by his son’s supreme sacrifice and acted accordingly.

It is a real great family ! The mother did not bang her husband but was delighted to have such a son. She kept aside the face safely and carried on her work. Kabir das praises love in his poetry because his entire family devoted their lives for love.

‘Prema biknoot mai suna mathe sate hot
Boo jhut vilambana kijiye tatchina deejaikat’

‘If you hear that love is being sold in the market don’t delay. Achieve love even at the loss of your head.’

Gnana dev and Nama dev were pleased at their hospitality. The next evening the guru devs were walking past the market place. They came across the body of Kamaal. The owner of the shop, unable to identify the body, hung it there to a piller. The villagers too couldn’t identify it. When the gurus came there, to their surprise, the headless body saluted them with folded hands. The hands were moving in tune with the bhajan being sung. Gnana dev and Nama dev were wonderstruck. They asked Kabir to explain. Kabir filled with tears, said’. He is a devotee of Vishnu. He has a wee bit of life in him, only to see you and hear you. Gnana dev at once visualized that the boy was Kabir’s son. He praised the son and sent for his head. He was brought back to life. The boy ran to their feet. This shows there is no difference between God and his disciples.

Loyee

Once a few sant purush came to his house. Kabir welcomed them with open arms and asked them to have dinner in their house. He entrusted the work to his wife and was happily involved in conversation with them. The wife was at a loss because there were no provisions at home and was no money to buy them. The husband was in no mood to listen. She had to make her own arrangements. Most of the shops were closed but one shopkeeper volunteered to help provided she sold her character to him. She was torn between her Hindu tradition of her chastity and between her Hindu custom of playing the role of a good hostess to saints. Ultimately her duty dominated over her personal chastity.

Loyee agreed on one condition. She could not serve her guests after losing her morals. So she would come back afters he fulfilled her duty as a good wife. The seth agreed and she served her guests with delicious dishes. Kabir was happy. As he was about to share his happiness, he was surprised to see his wife in a sad mood. When he enquired she came out with the whole story. Kabir was moved by her sacrifice and accompanied her to the Seth’s house. He felt serving the devotees is like serving God. Nothing can supersede this act.

The sethji was surprised to see her late in the night, in a heavy down pour of rain. He was all the more surprised to hear that her husband brought her there. He was washed out of his evil thoughts when he heard Kabir’s statement. ‘The Sethji is an incarnation of God because he has helped you to serve his devotees!’ He fell prostrate before kabir and became his disciple.

half the time he was engrossed in his love for God. God came to his rescue then and finished his task. Ultimately, they were wonderfully woven. He took those clothes to the exhibition to sell them there. No body dared to buy those clothes. Of course it is true ! Who are we to decide a rate for the clothes specially woven by God Himself.

Kabir was unmindful of the situation. A brahmin came begging for clothes. Kabir gave a cloth generously away to him. Then a muslim phakir asked for clothes. He gave the remaining cloth to the second person. He was not worried about the family or the money he lost by his charity. On the contrary he thought he was then free from the shackles of mundane business and could concentrate on God undisturbedly. He could see God in both a Hindu and a Muslim. It was indeed God who had come to test his bhakti. God’s leela cannot be understood easily. God deprived him of his business and went and complained to his mother of his generosity. The mother came angrily to the exhibition. God in the wassant lost in his meditation and the wounds were reflected on the brahmin beside and he started yelling. When Kabir opened his eyes he saw ‘Sri Rama’ himself. Kabir was thrilled and his mother’s joy knew no bounds. She embraced her son with tears of joy.

Once as he was walking across a house, he saw a woman grinding jowar. He was moved to tears by the tragic fate of those jowar seeds. They conveyed the impending death of man in similar fashion. He cried deeply like a child. A sadhu who happened to pass that way asked him the reason for his sorrow. He explained his feelings and asked whether there was no escape from death.

The sadhu being touched by his vairagya, explained the philosophy of life from the very same example. ‘Look my son, the jowar seeds do convey the temporary nature of man. But look carefully. A few seeds that are stuck to the rod are intact. They cannot be crushed. The same way whoever is stuck to the rod of God though being grinded in the samsara, will not be affected by Death.

Kabir was very much impressed by his teaching and devoted his time totally to God. There is a song of love which means ‘I don’t feel hungry or thirsty if I think of you, I can’t think of anything else if you are with me If this is the case of human bondage, how much more powerpul it will be with God!

Mecca

In the course of pilgrimage, Satguru Kabir once went to Mecca. It is a holy place for Muslims. When Kabir Saheb reached there in the evening he was tired. He slept near the mosque placing his feet towards it. As soon as the qazi saw him sleeping with his feet towards the holy Kaaba, he became angry. He approached Kabir and, with a stern look and harsh words, reprimanded him for lying in the wrong direction. Without getting up, Kabir Saheb said to him: “O Qazi!  I am tired. I cannot move my legs. Please place my feet in the direction where there is no God.” The qazi immediately turned Kabir’s feet in another direction. But soon he saw that the holy shrine was in the same direction where he had placed Kabir’s feet. He then moved Kabir’s feet in another direction, but again the shine moved to that direction. In whichever direction the qazi placed Kabir’s feet, invariably he saw the shrine of Mecca turn in that direction. Soon the qazi was exhausted. Seeing his discomfiture, the compassionate Satguru told him: “O Qazi! God is Omnipresent. In whichever direction you go, He is there.” The qazi realized the truth and, without any arguments, paid due respects to Satguru Kabir.

Explanation

Maya has been traditionally described as illusion. Often the physical world itself is referred to as being not real or an illusion. However, in my experience, the illusion is really in our perception of the physical reality where we experience the outside world as different from ourselves. We believe that happiness is a function of this outside world, thereby making us put extraordinary effort in changing this external reality. This dynamic experience stimulated by the external world is seductive and change is its inherent property. Even though this changing transient reality is unable to give us lasting joy or happiness, we continue to fervently believe in its capability to give us exactly that. This is Maya or illusion.

Kabir succinctly describes this fact by illustrating how the life's focus, for everybody, is on an external reality. And this continuing externally-directed focus is illusory because of the transient nature of the relationship between the subject and the object. Whether it is a rich man looking for a diamond, a beggar wanting a penny, a devotee seeking the object of her worship, Maalok translating a Kabir song that will be well received by the readers or Rajender monitoring readers' comments and page views on the site - they all are rooted in Maya. Here is an exercise that I recommend (I fail in it more often than not) - Try to find a source of joy that is independent of anything (external) or any person. Doing that may require some effort but it should be possible. Now try to observe (and not act on) your tendency to teach/tell/discuss/write this with others - not that there is anything "wrong" in being motivated by the external world; however this exercise will help you clearly see whether the source of joy is indeed coming from within you. Perhaps this may embark you too on a journey that Kabir describes as the untold story.

Seeker

“O Seeker, where do you seek Me? Lo!

I am beside you.
I am neither in temple nor in mosque:
I am neither in Kaaba nor in Kailash:
Neither am I in rites and ceremonies,
nor in superficial Yoga and false renunciation.

If you are a true seeker, you shall at once see Me: you shall meet Me in a moment’s time. Kabir says, “O Seeker! God is the breath of all breath.”

Jana bai

There are various ways to reach God. Bhakti yoga is one of them. The word Bhakti yoga means total surrender to God. There is no element of doubt in the Almighty. All their thoughts, words and deeds will be decided to God. God too doesn’t ignore such staunch devotees. He comes to their rescue.

The Bhakta stories reveal to the world two aspects. One is the all pervading; omnipresent God yields to the whole hearted faith of his devotees and settles down in their heart. Secondly God comes down personally to drive out the problem and sorrows of His devotees. They are revealed to the world as the miraculous powers of the devotees.

A five year old girl called Janabai was taken to Pandaripuram to have the darshan of Panduranga. That visit decided her fate. She wanted to devote her life to the services of the Lord and so she refused to go home with her parents.

Her parents’ grief was unquenchable. They asked her to consider their love for her and their plight in separation from her.

Janabai coolly answered, ‘I agree you love me, you miss me! But can you keep me with you for ever? Won’t you give me away in marriage to an eligible bachelor? All these bondages are but temporary in this world of Maya. The bondage with God is the only everlasting one. I have decided to lead the rest of my life here. That’s final. There is no going against it’.

Her parents had no other go. They had to leave her alone. Janabai went back into the temple and said, ‘Heh God’ I’ve freed myself from the fetters of the world for your sake’ She sang extempore a keertana.

Yere yere maadhyu Rama
Mana mohana meghasyama...

It meant oh God! You have entered my heart and my life purpose is fulfilled. Let me continue to be detached and let me get the company of satsang.

In answer to her prayer Namadev guru entered the temple then. She fell to his feet and explained ‘God is my father and you are my guru’. Namadev took her to his house to the loving care of his mother Gunabai.

One night there was a heavy down pour of rain. The matted roof top was blown away by the rain. Panduranga Himself came down to his devotee’s rescue. He held his Sudarshan Chakra as an umbrella for the inmates so that they could sleep undisturbed, while He repaired the roof top. Janabai happened to open her eyes and witness this miraculous scene. She was thrilled at it.

We may wonder at this incident. Why should God come down to repair it when He can at one waive of his hand, replace Namadev’s house with a palatial building. But that is distracting the devotee from the main path. If the devotee is overflowing in material comforts, he may be lured by the earthly objects.

Janabai fell to the feet of the Lord ‘Oh Lord! How happy I am to witness such a scene! How great a devotee is Namadev to you! How lucky I am! I could serve such a great devotee. Through my services to your special devotee, I was blessed with your Darshan. What else can I ask for in life?’

Panduranga answered with a smile, ‘How can I ignore the suffering’ of my dearest disciple! His every word, thought and action is centered round me. He becomes restless if he is separated from me! I enjoy his devotional songs. It is my utmost duty to help him in his suffering.’

Janabai felt convulsions in her body, ‘Oh God! We cannot describe your Krupa in words. Bless me also to be as staunch a devotee of You as Namadev. I will serve you and him for the rest of my life.’

Namadev woke up in the meanwhile and was surprised to see the ever shining Almighty in his poor house. He asked innocently what brought Him there. God answered even more innocently, ‘Namadev! I am very hungry. I came to eat food prepared by Janabai’.

Namadev made arrangements and in the meanwhile looked after God. Janabai cooked food in a jiffy and all the members of the family sat with God for dinner. Human nature is very unpredictable. Janabai spoke to God personally, cooked food with her own hands, was to serve Him personally, but still she was not happy. She cried to herself in the kitchen for being deprived of the company of God. Panduranga, who lives in the heart of His devotees, knew at once the desire of Janabai. He immediately got up from food saying, ‘Namadev! I need some rest. Keep my food aside. I will eat it after a little while. God pretended to go to sleep till Namadev himself went to bed.

Then God woke up and beckoned Janabai to serve him food. Janabai served him with great love and was staring at him with rapt attention. God tasted a little and said, ‘Janabai it is so tasty. Why don’t you try? He fed her personally. Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks. How, many devotees had such a privilege of eating from God’s hands? God discussed spiritual topics with her and disappeared early in the morning.

Once a few devotees like

  1. Jnanadev, 
  2. Nivrithinath, 
  3. Sopan, 
  4. Muktabai, 
  5. Ramananda Swami and 
  6. Kabir Das came to 
Namadev’s house.

At that time, Namadev was away. Janabai was deeply engrossed in fight with neighbouring lady over the cow dung cakes. Kabirdas questioned Jananai ‘How can you claim those cow dung cakes to be your own?’ Janabai said, ‘You are truthful people. You should give a proper judgment. While I was preparing the cow dung cakes, I chanted the name of Panduranga. So you can hear his name from my cow dung cakes. How strange but how true! Her cow dung cakes were chanting the name of Panduranga very melodiously. The other devotees were taken aback at her devotion.

Gradually Janabai’s name spread far and wide. People flocked together to have her darshan. She did not believe in Jnana. Her path was Bhakti Yoga. She totally surrendered herself to God. She explained the same in her song.

‘Dharila Pandariche chora gala. bandhoniya dora’
‘I garlanded God with my bhakthi and imprisoned Him in my heart.’

One day she was asked to grind Jowar. That night, after everybody went to bed, she was grinding it; the philosophy of life was churned out in the course of her grinding. Panduranga was impressed and touched by her philosophical rendering and helped her in her task. He sat beside her and discussed various aspects.

The day broke and the voices of devotees were heard from a distance. Janabai hastened Him to his sanctum sanctorum. God in his hurry left his jewelry beside her and covered Himself with her rug.

When the priests opened the doors what did they see? All the jewels of God were missing and in their place was a torn rug. Somebody identified it as the rug of Janabai. Immediately the priests lodged a complaint against her. A search warrant was issued. The jewels were found beside her grinding stone and at once she was arrested and death sentence was passed against her. Namadev’s pleadings fell into deaf ears.

Finally the day of her execution had come. She was dragged along the streets. She was badly injured but nobody cared. She requested not to drag her along, but to no use. Finally she was brought to the place of execution. Her disciples cried for her but some self seekers gloated over her misery. Little did they know, God likes one for his Bhakti but not for his caste or creed.

Janabai with folded hands prayed to God ‘Oh God! Why are you so cruel to me? Are you angry with me because I made you do household works? Frankly speaking, did I force you to do them? Did you not volunteer them? How can you ignore me now when I am punished for no fault of mine? I am not scared of death. In fact that takes me closer to you, but should not the people know the truth?’ Then she addressed the people thus, ‘Why do you gather here. Is it a feast to the eyes? Go home and pray to God. God alone can save you.’

She was about to be hanged. The name of Panduranga rose in the air and echoed into the sky. The onlookers’ could not believe their eyes. The rope disappeared and in its place a garland of flowers decked her neck. Janabai was filled with joy. The self seekers were ashamed of the mischief

One day Panduranga was writing something seriously. Jnanadev was surprised to see it and asked him the same. God answered, ‘I am copying the song s of Janabai’, Why, when there are so many songs of Vyasa and Valmiki, where is the need for these songs?’ God answered, ‘whoever sings these songs and leads a life accordingly, will be blessed by Me.’

Janabai is a realized soul. She was blessed and she laid an ideal path to others.
